Akureyri is the unofficial capital of North Iceland and has a population of about 18,000. This picturesque town has much to offer tourists, including the botanical gardens in the north and the numerous museums dedicated to varied subjects such as motorcycles, aviation, and art. While the town is a perfect place to stay while exploring remote Icelandic sights such as the Viti crater, Gooafoss waterfall, and nearby Myvatn geothermal lake. Akureyri Airport (AEY) is three kilometres south of the city centre and is the only international airport that services North Iceland. Due to the rather spaced-out country, there are no other major airports that bring in flights to this region. This means if you cannot find a flight into the area that suits your needs you need to look at different dates and times.
