With main base located at Cologne, Germanwings is a low-cost German airline that was initially established around 1997 as a subsidiary of Eurowings. From this time, it has grown to a reasonable proportion, and by 2011 it had developed a rather extensive network comprised of more than sixty five destinations. At this time, the Germanwings fleet consisted of thirty Airbus airplanes (models A319-112 and A319-132), which are distinctive by their paint schemes, many of which were devised as a homage to specific cities in Germany. Germanwings serves flights to many of the largest European cities, through countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Denmark and Austria. As usual with most low-cost carriers, Germanwings provides a no-frills service that does not include complimentary food or drinks (although on-board purchasing of such items is available). Unlike most competing airlines, it does provide a guarantee of connecting flights, which can most useful for travellers on a budget.
