Wind Jet (or Windjet) was founded in 2003 by the CEO of the disbanded Air Sicilia and enjoyed the benefits of a codeshare agreement with Meridiana Fly serving a range of domestic routes out of Palermo and Catania airports. Windjet flew to 26 destinations in total by 2012 and was the fourth largest Italian airline in terms of passenger numbers. With a 12 strong fleet of 5 Airbus A319-100s and 7 Airbus A320-200s (as of May 2012), Windjet offered scheduled and charter flights across the region at low-cost prices even though they did not promote themselves as a budget airline. Unfortunately, after a turbulent history, Wind Jet is no more.
Regrettably, after long merger talks with Italian airline giant Alitalia, Windjet ceased operating and cancelled all flights on August 11th 2012 as Alitalia pulled out of talks. The move left more than 300,000 passengers stranded and is reported to have resulted on the back of maintenance documentation for the ailing airlines fleet being withheld from Alitalia.
