Iberia Express

Airline name: Iberia Express

Iberia Express ICAO code: IBS

Iberia Express website: iberiaexpress.com

Iberia Express is a second Spanish airline owned by Iberia, the major Spanish carrier with its main hub operating out of Madrid at the Madrid-Barajas Airport. The idea behind the second airline was to dramatically lower costs to fly to various destinations and eventually switch out some of the money losing or low profit routes run by the parent Iberia Airlines whose mainstay business is short and medium haul flight routes. In addition, the Iberia Express budget airline could act as a feeder to carry passengers from smaller airports to connections at other airports that the main Iberia Airline operates out of. The new airline was made public on 6 October 2011 with resulting strike actions by Iberia staff including pilots who were concerned that they would lose their jobs. Despite the industrial action, the airline launched on 25 March 2012 with a compliment of new pilots and other staff rather than many being transferred from the main Iberia airline. Initial plans were that the Iberia Express airline might have as many as 40 aircraft in their network by 2015. Beginning in March 2012, four Airbus A320 planes formed the fleet configured with an Economy and Business class. By December 2013, Iberia Airlines operated only Airbus jets and had 15 in the fleet.
