Avianova was a Moscow based low-cost airline providing budget air travel throughout Russia and to Simferopol in the Ukraine. Starting their operations in August 2011 Avianova initially flew out of Vnukovo Airport but later moved their hub to Sheremetyevo Airport on the 28th March 2010. Avianova specialised in low cost travel within the region advertising flights as cheap as under US$10 to all of destinations. By June 2011 Avianova had carried in excess of 2 million passengers and grown to be Russia’s fourth largest airline in terms of monthly traffic statistics and Sheremetyevo Airport’s second largest carrier occupying 25% of the airports total capacity.
Despite this rapid success all was not well with the fledging airline as reported shareholder in-fighting eventually led to its demise in October 2011. Amid allegations that the US investment company (Indigo Partners), which held 49% of total shares, had blatantly ignored Russian laws and brought the firm into financial turmoil, a shareholder coup eventually led to bankruptcy.
