With headquarters in Luqa and a hub/base at Malta International Airport, Air Malta is the country's flag carrier (national airline). Founded in 1971 from the merger of two smaller companies, this airline has grown to a respectable proportion within its first 40 years of operations; as of 2011 it served no less than 37 destinations, mostly across the main European capitals (additionally to Israel and Lybia).
At this time, its fleet was comprised of a dozen Airbus aircrafts: five A319-100 and seven A320-200. A remarkable fact about this airline is the absence of tragedies through its history. There have been no fatal accidents in the 40 years since its inception (and still counting); asides from an airplane that was hijacked in 1997 but ended with no fatalities, its operations have been thoroughly pleasing and uneventful.
And that's not the only impressive track record held by this airline: it has been recognized by the Association of European Airlines in 2006 as the airline with the lowest rate of misplaced/lost passenger luggage.
Air Malta operates flights to and from a wide selection of airports across Europe. Of all of the airports that Air Malta serves, the following are some of the most popular:
