While Aer Arann may not sound too impressive as the third largest carrier in Ireland, its success really comes into perspective once you realize this operation started in 1970 with a single aircraft: a Briten-Norman Islander, which is still in use after four decades.
Originally, Aer Arann was a simple "island hopper" service, but its consistent growth soon led to the introduction of new routes to France, Ireland and UK, where to it soon availed a total of over 25 destinations.
As of 2011, its fleet was comprised of seventeen aircrafts with average age of around 15 years; including the classic Briten-Norman Islanders, as well as a few ATR 42-300, ATR 72-201/212, ATR 72-500, and a Dornier 329.
Aer Arann serves a respectable number of passengers each year: currently up to 1.5 million. In the past years, it has increased focus towards charter flights and aircraft leases to other airlines. The future is bright for this air carrier, with plans underway for subsequent expansion of its fleet and destinations.
